Alabama Scrap Laws

Hereford Scrap Metals, LLC operates in full compliance with all local, state and federal laws regulating the purchase of scrap metals. We employee both active and retired police officers at our location. If we feel there is any question about the ownership of the material we will immediately notify the police and prosecute anyone that sells us stolen material.  We also refuse the right to purchase any material for any person(s) that appear to be under influence of drugs or alcohol.

According to Alabama Code 13A-8-37, it is unlawful to purchase commercial scrap unless the seller has verifiable documentation and/or business license/company letter with contact numbers. Please call 256-538-8611 for more information about acceptable and non-acceptable material.

You must be 18 years old to sell scrap (except aluminum cans) and have a state or federal ID, passport.

noncommercial sellers - We are required to pay by check for the following:

* More than $50 for copper, copper/aluminum radiators, converters (we do not accept burnt copper/ AC coils require special documentation (call for information)

* More than $500 for all other scrap metal.

 

Scrap automobiles require a title, all vehicles purchased must be validated through the Alabama Scrap Vehicle Portal to check for liens and theft reports. All fluids must be drained, and the fuel tank and mercury switch be removed prior to scrapping.

If you are selling any commercial scrap, we must have proper documentation before purchasing. You must have a business/trade license and/or company letterhead. Please contact Dalton Cranford or Joe W. Hereford at (256)538-8611 for more information on setting up a commercial account with us.​

We follow all local, state, and federal environmental regulations. We do not accept any scrap metal that contains any fluids, fuel, freon, or any other hazardous material. We do not accept batteries that are busted, damaged, or leaking.
